Thank God for Banco De Oro for being open on weekends and longer hours. I just don't understand why other banks won't follow suit? Western Union Branches Open on a Sunday or Holiday in the Philippines?

What if your international remittance arrives on a Sunday or worse on a holiday? What Western Union branch should you go to?

The best branch is Sanry's Money Changer and Western Union booth at Greenbelt 1 Mall Makati along Paseo de Roxas and Sanrys at ParkSquare (right beside Wendys Burger). They are open on Sundays and on holidays.

On Holy week, they are open until Holy Wednesday. They close shop for Holy Thursday and Good Friday and resume operations on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday. They are open during the Greenbelt mall hours.

During the Christmas season the branch is open all day on December 24. The December 25 schedule is half-day and during the afternoons mall-hours only. They resume regular all-day operations from 26-31st prior to New Year's Day.

For 2010, Sanrys Money Changer in Greenbelt 1 and ParkSquare (in front of Dusit Thani Hotel) were open during December 25. This is my personal experience only. As most payments come in time for Christmas, we spent Christmas day scouring the city for Western Union branches open for business. Your best bet is the business district like Makati and moneychangers like Sanrys which open for the OFWs, balikbayans and tourists. The Sanrys Moneychanger Greenbelt branch was open from 2pm to 6pm while the Park Square branch was open from 1pm-6pm last December 25. Expect the same money changer's schedule for New Year's Eve.

Abortion in the Philippines: Issues on Population Control and the Ban on the Reproductive Health Bill

Abortion is legally not allowed in the Philippines. Women who induced abortion on their own for their unplanned or unwanted pregnancy faced up to 6 years in jail. There are no legal abortion clinics or any abortion or pro-choice centers in Manila. The Catholic Church has a great influence over the law here and any pro-choice movement would instantly be squashed.

The only abortion allowed in the Philippines is under the medical discretion of an OB-gynecologist. If the pregnancy will cause the death of the mother or if the fetus is already dead, just a sac, without a heartbeat or a blighted ovum. A medical miscarriage maybe induced through the use of Mifepristone, Misoprostol (cytotec) followed possibly by a D&E (dilation and evacuation) procedure commonly known by Filipinos as "Raspa" (which means to scrape off) to ensure no dead tissue is left inside the uterus.

Senator Juan Flavier used to have a population control program that offered free condoms and contraceptives at health centers. With a shift in power and President Arroyo courting the influence of the Catholic Church to be on her side has stopped the Population control program and the USAID donations of contraceptives to please the archbishops. Now the Filipino people are on their own. With the church promoting abstinence as a method to curve the population boom, women now have to suffer. Only the working class and the rich can afford medical contraception and family planning.

Abortion maybe illegal in the Philippines, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is talked about, but never publicly. No woman would ever dare admit to an abortion due to the shame, gossip and moral outrage of the community.

Still, there are Filipino women often too poor, with no means to buy contraceptives and are raising an average of 7-10 children that are left to the mercy of hilots (healers or massagers) that is, if they choose to undergo a backstreet abortion rather than raising another child they are unable to care for.

According to the International Family Planning Perspectives, Filipinas obtain abortions—often in unsafe conditions—to avoid unplanned births. In 1994, the estimated abortion rate was 25 per 1,000 women per year.

Where women go for abortions in the Philippines:

Hilots (healers or massagers) are sought out in communities. The deed is done in backalleys, shanties or privately rented rooms such as motels and apartelles.

Quiapo Church. Ironically, abortificients such as herbal cocktails and the ulcer drug Misoprostol (cytotec) are sold by peddlers around the Church area. There are what you call spotters who will ask women and passerbys if they are interested to avail of the drug. The police conducts annual raids with the media in tow. 

Self-induced or self-injury methods. This ranges from throwing yourself off a flight of stairs, asking to get punched in the belly, jumping around till you bleed, coathangers, catheters and everything gruesome. Any possible method to land in a hospital to get a D&E.

Sadly, most who self abort are teenagers and most end up dead due to complications and injury.

I guess what should be promoted by the government is not an abortion or an anti-abortion sentiment, but rather make safe-sex education and free contraception available to the public.

Why you should not Swallow Santol Seeds in the Philippines

Santol (Wild Mangosteen) grows abundantly in the summer and it is one of the sweetest things that would remind you of growing up in the Philippines. Santol is a delicately sweet, yet sour fruit commonly used in Filipino dishes like Sinigang.

So when you visit the Philippines, you may try all the tropical fruits such as sampaloc and santol. Do keep in mind when eating santol: Just suck, don't swallow. Santol seeds are deadly.

Eating enough santol seeds can perforate your intestines and kill you. The perforation will let out your bowel wastes into your blood stream. Santol seeds can also cause intestinal obstruction and immediate surgery is required. 

If you accidently swallowed one, make sure to watch your bowels, make sure to poop out the seed. You may try a laxative. If it doesn't pass and you are experiencing pain in your abdomen, go see a doctor.

More Santol Facts:
Santol is known scientifically as Sandoricum koetjape and called wild mangosteen by English speaking countries. It has several other names: gratawn in Thai, kompem reach in Khmer, tong in Lao, donka in Sinhalese, and faux mangoustanier in French. Santol grows from sea level of elevation to a height of 3,000 feet above sea level. It grows better in deep and organic grounds, and with great distribution of rainfall throughout the year, although it tolerates long periods of dry season. The distance of planting from each other is 20 to 25 feet.

Recently, in Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center (OMMC), we have patients being operated on for obstructions and perforations of the large intestines caused by swallowed santol seeds. Quite a number have died because of late presentation. The same situation is being encountered in other hospitals. 

We, the surgical staff of OMMC, feel the mortality and morbidity associated with santol seed swallowing have reached a magnitude to consider the practice of swallowing santol seeds a public health problem.

We feel this public health problem with its potential for premature death is totally preventable by simply NOT swallowing santol seeds.

Thus, this notice of concern and advisory.

How much is the Overstaying Fee for Tourists in the Philippines?

I think as a rule of thumb for any traveller staying in any country, don't show up at the airport with an expired visa. And don't throw a fit if they won't clear you for your flight. If you had time to overstay, you could at least endure a day in queue at the Bureau of Immigration.

Yes, they have a counter at the airport that deals with overstaying tourists. But NAIA doesn't want to encourage this among tourists. Overstaying shouldn't be taken lightly. In other countries, overstayers are detained then deported.

As of March 2010, a balikbayan friend of mine paid P2,500 for a 30 day overstay.

The penalty for overstaying is P500 per month plus extension fees which usually adds up to P2,520. The common figure I encountered when I ask overstayers, the ones who are drunk as shit in Boracay and the last thing they could care about are their passports.

Travellers can pay up at the immigration counter in NAIA on the day of their flight. A risky move and if you have insufficient funds they will not allow you to board your flight. Its a no pay, no flight policy.

So save yourself from the stress and get a proper extension at the Immigration office.

MSWEB Network Solutions informally known as Marvinsweb Solutions is a Web Hosting Provider in Manila, Philippines. For hosting services, they only accept full annual payments. They are not the cheapest around, but their hosting packages are reasonably price. Payment methods via Bank deposit and Western Union Money Transfer. They host a number of corporate websites and most notably the US Embassy local website. They are a popular hosting provider among local web designers and freelancers.

Things I liked about them:

*I like the fact that their site clearly indicates what you get in the hosting packages in detail and there are no hidden charges or missing services/features in the packages that would surprise you later on.

* They have a lot of hosting package options for you to choose from. So do your research and consult a professional about your website requirements before making a purchase. Buying the cheapest package available will not necessarily save you money, it might not be what your site needs. Consider your bandwidth needs, the files you will be uploading, etc.

* Their tech support is prompt and reliable in resolving issues.

*They are popular and have been in business for quite sometime.

Things I didn't like with their service: 

*Too many control panels to sign into, its overwhelming. You got one at the main site under the customers box, you got one for your domain like a helm/control panel and one separate login for tech or help support. So you have 3 passwords to juggle. 

* Their tech support is prompt and reliable in resolving issues. But blames you for the problem anyway. re: Activate DNS Settings button (doesn't really promise to automate things for you does it?). Guys its lame, just be honest if there is something wrong or some delay than to come up with some excuse (like DNS pointed to a different nameserver) just to pin the fault on your paying client. Most of your clients don't even know what a nameserver is, let alone redirect it somewhere with a specific address in mind. 

Well to users looking into purchasing web domains and hosting space, hope this helps you in making a decision. This post is a review, based on my opinion and my experience with the service. Hopefully the service would continue to live up to its name or make room for improvements.

Overall, Marvinsweb is a reliable hosting service. Yes, they can do without the quirks. But I think one should give the service a try :)
